Pre-Made Wipe Solutions: There are a lot of pre-made wipe solutions available that usually come in a spray bottle and are pretty affordable. Many popular cloth diaper brands offer a pre-made wipe solution. This option is very convenient as it involves no mixing, the solution comes in a convenient spray bottle, and it is easy to use on the go. You can spray the solution onto your wipes or directly on your baby's skin and wipe it away.
Here are a few brands of cloth wipe solutions:
-Thirsties Booty Luster: According to Thirsties.com, "Thirsties Booty Luster is free of petroleum, alcohols, animal products, parabens, sulfates, DPGs, or any dilutants; nor are any of our products ever tested on animals."
-Organic Heiny Spray by Happy Heiny: According to Happyheiny.com, "
Happy Heinys Heiny Wash is a unique, all natural and organic spray which will gently cleanse and refresh the entire diaper area with no harsh chemicals. Heiny wash contains only the safest ingredients derived from plants"
-bumGenius Bottom Cleaner: According to bumGenius.com, "Our proprietary formula is made with natural and organic ingredients including Cucumber Extract and Aloe Leaf Juice. It is gentle and non-irritating (safe for sore bums)"
Cloth Wipe Soap Bits: You can also purchase soap bits, which are small cubes of soap that you can mix with water in a jar, wipes container, or spray bottle and you're good to go. This option is very affordable. One cube of soap can make at least one batch of cloth wipe solution and costs about as much as one bottle of bottom spray typically costs. :
-Wee Essentials: These soap bits are made from natural, high-glycerine soap to dissolve easily when you add water. There is also shea butter added for extra hydration for the diaper area and phthalate free essential oils. The soap bits even come in a pthalate free jar.
Make Your own All Natural Cloth Wipe Solution: Making your own cloth diaper wipe solution is really easy and economical. There are several recipes for cloth wipe solution online, but I have found many of them to contain unnatural ingredients like baby oil and vague ingredients like baby wash or baby shampoo. When following any of these recipes, I advise you to replace baby oil (mineral oil) with a natural oil like coconut oil or olive oil, which hydrates very well, absorbs quickly, is cloth diaper safe, and most of all does not contain toxic chemicals that are hazardous to your baby's health. When you see baby wash or baby shampoo listed as an ingredient in a wipe solution recipe, be sure to add an all natural soap in place of baby bath products that contain questionable ingredients. One of the best things about using a cloth wipe solution and cloth wipes in place of disposable wipes is that you can avoid synthetic chemicals that will irritate your baby's skin. You really don't accomplish that if you use a baby wash that contains unnatural ingredients.
My favorite method for making my own wipe solution is to simply fill a glass jar with water and add Dr. Bronner's baby mild liquid castille soap. I just estimate the amount that I need. I like Dr. Bronner's baby mild soap because it is made with all natural and organic ingredients. The baby mild formula contains no fragrance so it's great for babies with sensitive skin or babies prone to rash.
I also like LuSa Organics Breathe soap, which is a bar soap, but it dissolves really well. It is all natural and organic and contains few ingredients. It is scented with lavender and eucalyptus essential oils.
A great resource for learning more about the ingredients in your personal care products is the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Cosmetic Database. You can look up the products that you are using or considering using and see how the product rates on a scale of 0-10. Zero being the lowest possible hazard rating based on the ingredients in the product and 10 being the most hazardous. I usually just use water on our wipes, but lately I've been thinking about using a solution for the nastier changes. This post was very helpful!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great tips! I was really intimidated about using cloth wipes at first, but it's so incredibly easy. I don't even always use wipes solution anymore either, now that my twins are toddlers and pooping less (and don't seem to care).
ReplyDeleteWe prepare our own solution. I use Castille soap and Tea tree oil, plus aloe vera juice, and water :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips and for the directions on making your own!
